Goosebumps
During the last months, other events have affected our handling of Drew's illness and death. The joys of a first grandchild and the excitement of another on the way have been great spirit-boosters. The Stanley Cup last night gave us a reason to cheer. Seeing so many family and friends and reading the hundreds of cards and emails gave us hope and pride. And then there's the World Cup...
We had first talked about going to Germany this year. After round one of chemo, we discussed at least taking time off to really enjoy watching it with Drew and our friends and teammates. After round two and the transplant, we discussed watching it from the bone marrow clinic, and wondering if we would be the only ones cheering.
We knew that, whatever venue, we would experience both excitement and that pang of what might have been. Like thousands of others watching, Drew would be one of those kids thinking about his dreams of being there and wearing the US jersey and how, with a little more luck or work or different decisions, this would have been his year. We watched Saturday with that thought, wondering how much different life would be if he were in the same place of Brian McBride, making a bit higher jump and heading the ball into the goal (versus over the crossbar), breaking the eventual 1-1 tie against Italy.

Yesterday, we found Drew's 1994 assignment book from the fifth grade. One assignment was to write your obituary. He attacked this assignment aggressively, with a lengthy description of a glorious life of sports, business, a home in Paris, wife and kids, and several references to charitable giving to share his riches with others.
Of course, at age 11, he envisioned he would make his money in sports. We could hardly read any further, though, when he listed his future moment of fame as "scoring the winning goal in the World Cup, beating Italy 2-1".
Goosebumps.

Goosebumps, truly goosebumps.
I'm sure Drew is having his own special soccer game in heaven and probably is making goals left and right against the Italians up there!
it's good to know that you are watching the World Cup.... in months to come you would have regreted NOT... just do what feels natural and do what feels good to the soul........ hugs and kisses.
My heart bleeds for your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Goosebumps! Finding those things make you feel closer and yet so far away. My thoughts and prayers are with ya'll. May the memories last a lifetime.
Hi Jane and Boxley...this is so cool...Chloe just called me from Florida having just talked to Jordan from back stage at the Dave Matthews concert...evidently, Jordan had taken the laminated copy of Drew's obituary to the concert with her, which described his love for the Dave Matthews band, she showed it to Dave and he signed it! Very cool. Drew has to be smiling! Dixie
Just last week I glanced through the 2000 South Meck yearbook and saw Drew was All-Conference,All-Region and All-State. He had a very special natural talent for the game and I know he could have scored that winning goal against Italy! Love to ya'll. Linda L.
Goosebumps! Drew was the angel on the field. Smiling and cheering everyone on. Keep on Keeping on, Team Llewellyn, You are in my thoughts daily.
Hugs & Kisses...
Christy

The Australian Socceroos are through to the second round in the World Cup....our first game is against Italy. Let's win this one for DREW!
Dear Team Llewellyn,
I spent over an hour today reading through the last few months of your walk through this time with Drew. Spirit is a word often used to describe Drew and that certainly applied to his rebel spirit that led him to Hyde School.
Drew was intent on doing things his way while he was a student here and I often felt that it was a loss for both of us that he would not take a risk and let more people into his world. Thank you so much for doing this blog to let me see Drew in his last months of life and share the highs and lows as you went through this awful experience. We lost our niece as she sat in UCLA Medical Center four years ago waiting for a heart transplant at age 4 and part of our learning from that experience was signing up to be organ donors and I plan to sign up to be a bone marrow donor after reading your appeal for help.
Drew's passion for life was felt by all that came in contact with his flame and watched him shine.
He was too good for our world and I hope his spirit will watch over us as we carry on without his soul here on earth.
Thanks again for your effort and inspiration on this blog.
Sincerely,
Dan Murphy

Goosebumps indeed .... every day things will happen that will remind you of Drew and his ambitions for his own life. Too often people coin the phrase that he/she lived their life to the fullest not knowing just how long they were to have on this earth ... at least they know at the end that they gave it all they had ... this truly applies to Drew too ! Love, Jill G
PS: What a cool guy Dave Matthews is ! Jordan will treasure that momento for a very long time.
